What should I bring to prepare my tax return?
It depends on your situation, but generally a photo ID, Social Security or ITIN numbers for everyone on the return, your income forms (such as W-2s and 1099s), last year’s tax return, and records for any deductions or credits. See our Getting Started guide for a full checklist.

Common tax questions
When are quarterly estimated taxes due in 2026?
Estimated tax payments are due four times a year: April 15, June 15 and September 15 of 2026, and January 15 of 2027. If a due date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. You generally owe estimated tax if you expect to owe $1,000 or more after withholding and credits. See the IRS guidance on estimated taxes, or read our full guide to quarterly estimated taxes for the self-employed.
Should my LLC elect S-Corp status?
Sometimes, and it depends on your profit. An S-Corp election can lower self-employment tax because only your reasonable salary is subject to it, but it adds payroll filings and a separate return, so the saving has to be big enough to cover that extra cost and effort. It is worth modelling before you elect. See the IRS page on S corporations, or read our comparison of LLC vs. S-Corp vs. sole proprietor. We can run the numbers for your situation.
Why is my refund smaller than last year?
A refund is not a bonus; it is the amount you overpaid during the year. It shrinks when your withholding drops, when your income rises without your W-4 keeping up, when a credit you claimed before no longer applies, or when you had self-employment income with no tax withheld. A child ageing out of the Child Tax Credit at 17 is a common cause. Our guide to why you did not get a tax refund walks through each reason.
Do I have to file a tax return if I earned very little?
Often you are not required to, but filing anyway is usually the right call. Filing is what triggers a refund of tax already withheld and lets you claim refundable credits such as the Earned Income Credit, which can pay out even when you owe nothing. The filing thresholds depend on your age, filing status and type of income; the IRS publishes them and offers a Do I Need to File a Tax Return? tool. Ask us if you are unsure.
How do I check the status of my refund?
Use the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool. It updates once a day and needs your Social Security number, filing status and the exact refund amount. Most electronically filed returns are processed within 21 days; paper returns and amended returns take considerably longer. We keep this and the other IRS lookup tools on our Resources page.
